For two weeks this summer, some of the biggest names in theatre will collaborate right here on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Top talents in music, set design, costume design, lighting, and sound from diverse backgrounds such as Broadway and Chicago will converge upon the Highlands Performing Arts Center, partnering with Artistic Director Scott Daniel of Mountain Theatre Company and playwright Katie Berger-Wood from Atlanta to bring Dancin' in the Street to area audiences.
“We produce everything,” says Daniel. “All of our shows originate here—costumes, dance steps, the sets… It’s all created right here in Highlands. We have a unique patronage here on the Plateau, and doing everything in-house allows us to curate the perfect programming for our audience.”
Conceived as a tribute to his parents, Daniel describes Dancin’ in the Street as “Friends meets In Living Color.” Geared toward early Gen-X and Millennial audiences, the show features folk, disco, early R&B, and Motown songs from the late 70s through early 80s.
The story, written by Daniel and Berger-Wood, focuses on three couples in their mid-twenties to early thirties as they face the changes and challenges typical of that life stage. “There’s even a will-they-won’t-they, Ross and Rachel type of storyline,” Daniel shares.
Casey Reed of New York serves as Music Supervisor, serving up fan-favorite tunes of the era that will make the audience want to dance along.
In fact, they’ll get a chance to do just that during intermission, when everyone is invited onstage for a dance party! As a bartender serves up drinks, the audience can explore the set, designed by David McQuillen Robertson of Sleep No More, promising an immersive, memorable experience like no other.
While the show’s storyline centers on a neighborhood block party, “It’s ultimately a show about community and family, shared through music. Each character’s thread in the tapestry comes together to create one big piece.”
Perfect for a date or girls’ night out, Dancin’ in the Street promises stellar entertainment that is sure to be a highlight of your summer.
